Good Manners and Right Conduct Lalo na Ngowan na Election...

The months of March and April had shown two manifestations that are shared by so many Nabuenos which I believe is a part of our way of living. From looking at proud and happy faces of parents witnessing their children’s graduation to the somber and reverent mood at the via crucis during holy week have once again reminded me of the true and inner beauty of our town.

Judging from the number of graduates from each of the commencement exercises that I have attended ranging from prep and elementary schools to secondary and college levels all happening in our beloved town supports the claim that Nabua’s literacy rate is among the top in the country. While the overcrowded church during the siete palabras and the thousands of penitents who joined the miercoles and viernes santo processions had shown time and time again the religiosity of Nabuenos.

Also, during these same two months, some of us may have also witnessed the ugly truth of Nabuenos’ behavior towards our fellow kabanwaans. Even before the official start of the 2010 election campaign period, dakol ng mga uring-uding na ipinamamareta o narungog ta towards our fellow kababayans who are seeking local political office.

If Nabuenos are truly religious and educated, why are there too much ‘pakaraotans’ in our town. Why can we not discuss issues in a civil manner just like educated people do. Why can we not forgive our brothers and sisters and guide our corrupt politicians to follow Jesus’ teachings just like religious people do. As educated individuals who follow the teachings of our faith, perhaps we have acquired certain level of understanding and be able to influence people especially the immoral mindset of some of us.

The sad part is, a ibang mga kabanwaan ta who claims to be educated from the top universities or schools in the country are amo pa labi. They put themselves in their self-made pedestals and think that they are better than the rest of us. Ading mga tawong adi mig-poon sa mga intriga o rimong-rimong na oda kamaturan which sadly divides the town and affects the line of thinking towards the town’s common good.

As the 2010 local election draws near, adi ibang mga kabanwaan ta are completely engaged in various stages of nonsense innuendos and other questionable activities. Do we really have to take part in these actions? Ta kita mig-boto kandang mga kandidato, what will we require of them? Should we wait until we receive money from them in exchange of our votes and let the candidates who paid us win.

Mga ngod, ta gatikot man sana adi mga kandidatong pig-pilian ta for our local government unit, dire na kita magpara-awod pa na they do not have this skill or that competence or magpara-criticize pa. We just have to be vigilant and support whomever we think can partner with the people to move Nabua realize its full potential.

We know that there are other Nabuenos who may have the prowess and maybe better suited to run but the fact of the matter is, at this election we only have a short list to choose from. So let us think positive and rationally select and vote for the candidate who we can truly believe will be of service to the Nabuenos, be it in the political office or as a good neighbor.

As a side note, I’ve met some of the local candidates and actually been approached by a few and was impressed by the integrity of a handful as I observed the way they are handling their campaign. However, there are other candidates who in my own humble opinion are doing their campaigning differently as anyone can see the obvious and devious tactics they are engaged in.

Politics as they say is dirty and the dirt of politics has been spread all over our town. But let us be mindful that there are still several of our local candidates whose heart and mind are in the right place. The question is, how will the morals of the religious and the common sense and wits of the educated play in the electoral process? Sadi Nabua, kadakol pa man ka mga educado saka relihyosong tawo. Hopefully, they can provide a better example to the rest of us, politicians or not.
